Usually, the choice for the Madden cover athlete tells us something about what we can expect from an area of focus in the game's annual focus. If that proves true in this year's game, running backs and playmakers could be set for a huge year.
EA unveiled the cover athlete for Madden 25 on Tuesday, San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey, becoming the first San Francisco 49er to land the honor in the last 25 years and the first running back to do so in more than a decade.
One of the contemporary faces of the 49ers, McCaffrey was a catalyst for San Francisco's journey to Super Bowl LVIII in 2023, leading the NFL with a career-high 1,459 rushing yards and 2,023 yards from scrimmage. He also scored 21 total touchdowns, earning his third career Pro Bowl nod one year after helping San Francisco advance to a separate NFC Championship.
“Christian’s electrifying, dynamic, and physical play style perfectly represents the gameplay innovations we’re bringing to Madden NFL 25 and made him the perfect fit for this year’s cover,” said Mike Mahar, senior production director of Madden NFL.
"To be on the cover of Madden NFL is a career achievement and an honor I share with all of my teammates, coaches, and 49er Faithful who have helped make it possible," said McCaffrey. "I'm pumped to get back on the field this year to give Madden players more reasons to keep scoring touchdowns with me in Madden NFL 25."
However, many fans aren't happy with the choice of McCaffrey for the Madden 25 cover. Some think that Travis Kelce was the clear-cut choice, while others are angry that Joe Burrow still hasn't been on the cover of the game, despite being one of the best QBs in the league. Some 49ers fans also aren't happy, because they are afraid their team gets hit by the Madden curse, and wouldn't mind seeing Travis Kelce or Burrow in the cover for that reason.
